Sadie

On May 25th, we were lucky enough to adopt our 100 lb. puppy from Colorado St. Bernard Rescue.

Sadie came home with Christine on Friday evening for her final stop after being in several homes of both owner and foster parents.  The foster parents are not only wonderful people, but must have the inner strength of a Saint (pun) in order to give up such a wonderful pooch as Sadie.

Look at that face!

From the moment she came home, we knew we were already hostage to her sweet temperament and heart breaking face.  This girl is going to be the source of tons of pleasure to our family of 5 (Christine and Myself, Maverick the Golden Retriever and Kisses our cat).

Leaving her foster home must have been hard on her as it would be on any Saint.  She had several brothers and sisters to play with and foster parents that are as loving and caring as could be.  We tried to make her comfortable as possible and make her understand she had the run of the house and the backyard.  We think she still thought she was on "guest" status.  Little does she know, it's their world, we just live in it.

I came home that day after she came home.  I walked in the house, sat on the floor, and from what I can see, I think CSBR found a good match for us and for Sadie.  What do you think?

So now Sunday, someone is falling into a routine slowly, but we think and hope happily.  She has learned her brother Maverick is not as playful as she may hope.

Maverick is 7 years old and  happy dog, but he plays for a few minutes and then lies down.  He's' better in the snow.  When it is hot, he found the wisdom of an mature dog and kicks back until the cool air comes back at night, or if he has to, snow in city park  ----->

We can't wait for winter, we are four blocks from the Golf Course and they can hop through the snow and make snow angels.

Kisses and Sadie seem to get along fine, although the breadth of the relationship will probably be mostly ignoring each other.  Kisses is a cat in every sense, and she decides when it is time to cuddle, share food and the like.  She runs a tight household and Maverick was a slow learner but Sadie seems comfortable with the way Kisses has set up the home.

But Sadie soon learned that there are other friends in the neighborhood that stop by all the time.  Beta (Siberian Husky) and Seamus (Standard Poodle) have the energy and attitude perfect for young St. ready to wrestle.  Which Beta did for about three hours last night in the backyard.

Seamus didn't make it yesterday but will stop by in the next day or two to say hello.

Beta started out by harassing Sadie as the new kid on the block and soon found out that 100 lbs. a puppy has got game.  The ran and chased and rolled around and wrestled until they couldn't take it and fell asleep on the grass on top of each other with Maverick joining in for that activity.

Needless to say, there will be many photos to come.  For now, Maverick and Sadie are walking in step, and she will become more and more comfortable.  We don't need any more time to know we found the right friend to move in.....

Well, it has been three days and we are thrilled with Sadie.  We don't know how anyone gave her up.  She has the sweetest temperament, is great with our cat, and is starting to feel comfortable.  We think she need a few days to understand she is finally home and never has to worry about packing up again.  She is going to be with us for the rest of her life.  We knew that when she walked in the door.

We think the first 24 hours were a little sad for her.  She probably missed her friends (especially Roscoe as we understand).  But a walk down at Cherry Creek in the dog park, a swim in the river with a hundred other dogs and her new brother seemed to help her understand she is going to have plenty of socializing.

Maverick, our Golden and cat, Kisses, has completely accepted her entry into the home.  They didn't play as soon as she was in the home, Mavericks a little lazy, but we brought in a friend who comes by all the time (Beta - Siberian husky) who plays non-stop.  They played for a while in the backyard, and Maverick stepped up for a while until they tired him out (he's 7 years old).  Beta and Sadie kept it up for a few more hours and Sadie slept well last night.  I think it helped a lot in Sadie feeling like this was a home she could play and run and have fun in.

She's tall enough that we have to get used to keeping food out of reach until training is complete.  Had one close call with my dinner when I got up to get another drink.  ;)   Maverick is shorter and very well behaved about food.  We taught him the difference between his food and our food.  We'll start training in a few days when we feel she is completely at home.  She comes when called already as she knows there is an ear scratching involved.  Then we can get to the rest.  Christine does the hard work there, and she is very good at it.  I am sure Sadie is going to be great as she seems smart and willing.

We want to thank everyone at Colorado St. Bernard Rescue.  The work they do is priceless for these treasures that need people who appreciate all the wonderful attributes they have.

The seem to becoming very comfortable lying around together

Maverick is learning the game of Tug of War, Sadie seems to have it down

There is some horseplay going on.  Maverick is strangely happy with the fact that Sadie just lies on top of him and he gnaws on her neck until he gets the upper paw.

These two are almost in the same weight class, but not for long as the puppy has a good 50 lbs she will probably gain in the next year.

.

Well it's a heartbreaking story to say the least.  We lost our Golden, Maverick as seen above in the third week of August.  It is was as hard as it could be and the same week of our wedding.  A few weeks past and we were devastated and so was Zuca (we changed Sadie's name).

We had as many play dates with friend's dogs and a Saint from another rescue family, but it was not enough for Zuca.  She needed a full time buddy.

We decide to Foster Tucker (photos below).  He spent a lot of effort trying to let us know he should stay awhile.  He and Zuca became fast friends, or more like brother and sister that really get along.  He is a sweetheart and has attached himself to Christine for life.  We had to adopt.
